The perfect two-day guide in Copenhagen, Denmark

The country with the happiest people-DENMARK, here’s why!!!

The buzzing capital mixes royal history, modern architecture and loads of culture with sustainable living and booming restaurant scene. Constantly evolving, it can be hard to know exactly what to see and do. Being one of the top five most expensive countries in the WORLD makes it hard for the backpackers budget. Keeping your stay short and sweet can limit the amount of money you spend on accommodation. We recommend 2-3 days exploring this expensively beautiful HAPPY city.

NYHAVN

Nyhavn is a 17th-century harbor and is easily the most iconic landmark in Copenhagen. The most popular pictures coming from Copenhagen are from this colorful harbor. Lined with wooden ships, modern boats, multicolored townhouses, and seafood restaurants, this port is a MUST for visitors. This landmark is a public space, so it’s easy to come and go as you please and it is also FREE to explore. Nyhavn attracts a crowd as diverse as its history. Stop for a coffee and pastry before exploring one of the oldest parts of the city. If you are visiting this city with your lover, bring a padlock with both of your names on it and lock it on the canal bridge. This symbolizes you love together will be locked down. We however, did not get the memo until seeing the love locks in person.

BIKE THROUGH THE CITY

Copenhagen is a marvelous city to see by bike. On every street there is a lane in the road designated for bikers only. In this city, more people bike than drive it seemed like. Only bike this city IF you are a conditioned biker as many locals use this as their means of transportation. No one wants to be stuck behind a foreigner taking a selfie while in the bike traffic.

STROLL THROUGH THE MARKETS

We had an amazing afternoon strolling through the Torvehallerne Market near the city center. This is an urban covered marketplace featuring stalls with local produce, gourmet foods, beverages & desserts. Come to this market hungry as there is so much to try!! Just outside of the market were some of the best tacos we have had in Europe-made on freshly pressed corn tortillas (tacos in Denmark? sounds funny).

HAVE A LITERAL SMORGASBORD

We had never experienced a true smorgasbord until we came to Copenhagen. The perfect place for a Sunday brunch or ANY DAY brunch- Kalaset. This restaurant is super hip and strives to only put out the best products possible with everything made in house. As it is one of the most popular places for brunch, a reservation may be necessary. On our smorgasbord plate we enjoyed, scrambled eggs with chives, sausage with sweet mustard, bacon, roasted potatoes, spinach salad, one Swedish meatball, sliced fruit, smoothie shot, brie with walnuts and bread! Also on the side we had to get a serving of raspberry walnut pancakes because brunch is not complete without them. Though the prices are high at Kalaset compared to the USA- you will be full for the rest of the day and your stomach will be oh so HAPPY!

VISIT THE INTERESTING COMMUNITY OF CHRISTIANIA

Come and visit Copenhagen’s hippie neighborhood-Christiania. A former military base that sat abandoned for many years before becoming the neighborhood we know today. In 1971, a group of hippies broke down the barricades and began squatting there. Nowadays, approximately 900 people live in the area, comprising a community that has its own rules and regulations completely independent of the Danish government. The“Green Light District” is the most popular destination in Christiania where locals set up stalls and sell marijuana and hash. Other than just scoring some buds, in this free town there is art, music, souvenirs, cafes and restaurants to enjoy as well.
